MinionTV, a 5 piece atmospheric instrumental rock band from Liverpool, England, have released a 5-track EP, 'Arecibo', which takes its name from the Puerto Rican observatory.
The opening track, ‘Send’ is no more than an intro to the EP, a taste of things to come if you will, which comfortably leads into the title track, which reminds me of a band called The Shadow Project from a few years ago. Layer upon layer develops and bring us into a chorus of drums with (perhaps too) many other sounds to concentrate on, as I am forced to clear my head of sonic clutter and focus on the song in hand. Whilst I could quite happily lose myself in this, I start to hear an early breakdown of instruments that fade out to a rather abrupt end, leaving me wanting more; I am left unsure of the next step.
‘Tomorrow Will Bring Bulldozers’ opens with a spacey-sounding organ, just another example of how many different sounds these guys have in the bank. With a completely different stature to the opener, I wait for the song to explode and fortunately, I am not disappointed. We are treated to over 2 minutes of mess and confusion towards the end of the song, whereby the only way to concentrate is by blocking out everything else, closing your eyes and tilting your head back.
‘Keep The Negatives’ opens up with a slight pull on the heartstrings with its melancholy piano, echoed with a simple guitar lead. Brass instrumentation again demonstrates the breadth of musicianship on show. The song itself is simple but effective, complementing its predecessors, whilst providing hope and excitement for the EP’s closing track.
‘Vi’ once more lures us into a false sense of security, making us unsure of what the next beat/chord/loop/note will bring. It also introduces to a snippets of programming, something I feel the other songs could have benefitted from. Its addition, albeit late, is exciting and gives us a taste of what a live show might entail.
Once finished, you want to start from the beginning again, listening out for perhaps a loop or track you didn’t hear before. With its different styles and different stems, perhaps MinionTV are trying to mimic the information processed by the Arecibo Observatory. One thing I am sure of though, is that if this EP was beamed into space, the recipients would have no objection. |
