Kid North’s debut EP represents the recent musical outing of Mathieu Artu, better known as the man behind the orchestral post-rock compositions of RQTN but let’s not let that fool you, far from minimalist piano pieces Kid North are a full on pop-rock band that might leave followers of his previous works scratching their heads but is sure to draw in a lot of new friends.
From the brief four track offering’s get go it’s clear what this EP is about. ‘Relief 101’ bursts into life with a danceable beat and synthesizer lines accompanied by soaring vocals. Instantly calling to mind Friendly Fires and Phoenix, Kid North’s influences are clear. What sets this showing apart from those bands however, is a much more vivid technical proficiency, second song ‘Hide and Seek’ demonstrates a weaving bassline and jittery drums, Artu’s vocals are always exciting and uplifting and every song sounds like it could set the airwaves alight.
As the blurb accompanying the songs rightly points out the music is created for ‘Daydreaming girls who go out clubbing on the weekend’. Everything is funky and exciting and engaging. And while Kid North was created with dancefloors in mind, those with appreciations for expertly crafted sound and instrumentation will not be able to ignore it. The EP was recorded entirely by Artu but Kid North have since acquired other brilliant musicians from bands Radius System and Jean Jean, and while the initial songs are fantastic, what the band with a newly completed line-up come up with next is sure to be stellar.
