“He's fookin left to join some fookin band in America” Man, my main man Daz was really looking forward to seeing Ramesses at the recent gig in Manchester, including warlock Tim Bagshaw, as he kills it on stage apparently. But, alas, he has left. 'Who are the band he has joined?' I pondered, not bothering to utilise the obscure search engine, Google. Well, I know now. It's Serpentine Path, and for goodness sake is this band giving me a p.b.w on the reg when I listen to it. All I can say right now is... imagine yer dog got a tank dropped on it and you tried to in vain lift the tank off it, and said to yerself “I cannae, its heavy as fuck.” Well, that's what Serpentine Path are like. The tank that killed your dog.
Consisting of the entire roster of lately-canned Unearthly Trance – Jay Newman, Darren Verni and Ryan Lipynsky – and former Electric Wizard bassist and recent Ramesses guitarist Tim Bagshaw, Serpentine Path takes a more direct, straight forward brutal path than Unearthly Trance ever did. 'Arrows', the album's first track is a slow, enormous and bilious war beast. Vocally, Lipynsky sounds like a homesick downtuned chainsaw on moonshine from the earth's core, which continues throughout the album apart from that one song were he sounds like James Blunt. Just kidding. A total chug fest, I this might be the tune with the highest tempo on the album. After this it's slower, slower, slower and then we have actually frozen time. Now I can go and wander over to the old folks home and take advantage of time stopping by stealing all their drugs and porn.
Notable highlights include “Beyond the dawn of time”, which is similar to “Arrows” except now they sound like a werewolf on rag week. The hooks come slow and big; if this tune was a boxer it would be 69 mashed-up Mike Tysons sewn together and injected with benzo fury. Final track “Only a monolith remains” is what I imagine getting wanked off by the ginger burd from Dr. Who would feel like, if the music became a sentient sonic entity and wanted to pull me off. With a spiked gauntlet on. “Blergh dergh gurgh durghhhhhhhhhh” is a line so memorable I'll have it tattooed on ma ged. This is a total dancer of an album.
