Honch clocking in. Towards the end of last year, I let things slip in favor of getting absolutely wankered in an attempt to drown out my unbridled hatred for the festive period. Well, now the dust has settled and everyone has boxed up all the decorations and put all the boxes back into the loft for another year, along with the good will and peace. Fortunately, while slumped on my sofa, overshadowed by the looming pile of discarded beer cans and crisp packets, I came across a little gem of an album by Glaswegian four-piece El Dog. ‘Hey Werewolves’ is described on the press release as ‘an album that arcs from retrospective romance to anger and back’. What does that even mean? Who cares? These boys are amazing, like a really interesting Biffy Clyro, before they started churning out those large radio-friendly barrels of tepid piss.

From the acoustic trance-forming meanderings of Sundown through to the melodic reprise that is Sunrise this album has something for all tastes. Full to the brim with surprises from emotionally-charged post-rock to the sweet plough of vocal-driven indie-rock. The title track Hey Werewolf is a formula for fucking aural beauty. I have listened to this album quite a lot over the past few weeks and it hasn’t once got boring. I even keep finding myself having a little mosh around the living room to Blossom and Drop Dead. Makes me feel like I’m back in my old teenage hang out at the Mudd Club, swinging my long centre-parted hair about; not much left up there to swing about these days though. Store Front Music is probably my favourite. When the twinkling piano and plucked guitar strings meet that apocalyptic synth bass, my arsehole starts twitching. Now there’s some serious imagery for you!

With a 'name your own price' download, this is a must for any music fan regardless of your genre preference so go forth, download and enjoy. If you live in the highlands, I suggest you lucky fuckers go and see them live.
