Tonight is a sellout and it’s getting quite difficult to move around. The Arches in Glasgow is a repossessed set of subway tunnels that have become a venue which hosts everything from clubs and gigs to business conferences and, apparently at one point, a séance. Tonight though it’s host to M83, who are fresh off the critical acclaim for their latest album 'Hurry Up We’re Dreaming' and they’ve managed to draw in a lot of enthusiastic people eager to hear them belt out those tracks, and hopefully a few classics thrown in for good measure.
First up tonight though is Porcelain Raft who have a nice collection of gentle indie pop numbers. They are a nice fit for tonight’s headline band and the songs sound great but it might be a bit too subdued and quiet for the people who came here to dance.
M83 suffer from no such shyness and, albeit after technical difficulties, they take to the stage to the sound of swelling synths and a big cheer. They open with the Intro which is a slowly building number that climaxes with thundering drums; it’s a perfect starting gambit and everyone is in awe. The band consistently generate a sound that’s far too big for the room that they’re playing in, with their 80’s-loving sonic tendencies sounding big enough to fill Wembley.
With their last album being a double, there was always going to be the question of which of a multitude of tracks to play. They manage to choose the best of the bunch for the most part, with only a few mis-fires. Slow number Wait is one of these and it’s almost sleep-inducing at points. Fortunately though, Anthony Gonzales and co. are always ready to drop in something danceable. Midnight City comes in at the end of the set and suitably blows the roof off.
However, it seems that the points where the band are having the most fun are when the frontman and his female vocalist can step away from the mics and just go to town on their equipment with the band’s instrumental numbers. Encore closer Coleurs is an explosive disco song and as everyone on stage throws themselves into it with passion so to does the audience; it’s a great way to end the set.
Tonight M83 show that they have the potential to be a great live band, but it would be nice to see them step up their production and rock some bigger venues. With the same amount of enthusiasm they’ve displayed tonight, they could be capable of something spectacular.
